How much life insurance do you need?
The goal of life cover is simple: if you are not there, your family should be able to keep its lifestyle, repay loans and still reach big goals. There are a few common ways to estimate that.
Income multiple
Quick check10 to 15 times your yearly income, less any cover you already have.
Need-based (used here)
More accurateFamily expenses until retirement + loans + goals, minus savings and existing cover.
Human Life Value
Income-focusedThe present value of the income you are expected to earn until retirement.
Term insurance is usually the cheapest way to get a large life cover. Buy early, because premiums rise with age, and tell the insurer the truth about your health and habits so claims are not disputed later.
How much health insurance cover is enough?
Hospital bills keep rising, and one serious illness can wipe out years of savings. These starting points are common guidance, not rules:
| Your situation | Suggested cover |
|---|---|
| Single, metro city | ₹10 lakh or more |
| Couple, metro city | ₹15 lakh or more |
| Family of 4, metro city | ₹20 to ₹25 lakh, often via a base plan plus super top-up |
| Eldest member 45+ or with a pre-existing condition | Add ₹5 to ₹10 lakh to the above |
| Smaller towns | A lower starting cover can work, as hospital costs are usually lower |
Tips before you buy
- Do not rely only on employer cover, because it usually ends when you leave the job.
- Check waiting periods, room-rent limits and exclusions, not just the premium.
- Declare pre-existing conditions honestly to avoid claim rejection.
- Compare the insurer's claim settlement record and hospital network.
- Consider a super top-up to raise your cover cheaply.

Frequently asked questions
How much life insurance do I need?
A common shortcut is 10 to 15 times your yearly income. A more accurate way is to add the family expenses you want to keep funded until retirement, your loans and future goals such as education, then subtract your savings and any existing cover. This calculator uses the second method and shows the first as a cross-check.
How much health insurance cover is enough?
It depends on your city, your family size and your age. In metro cities, many people aim for at least ₹10 to ₹15 lakh for one or two people and ₹20 lakh or more for a family. Medical inflation is high, so a base plan with a super top-up is a cost-effective way to reach a bigger cover.
Is the premium shown a real quote?
No. It is an estimate built from rough market ranges, so treat it as a guide for budgeting. Real premiums depend on the insurer, your health, lifestyle, the policy term and any riders you choose. Always compare actual quotes.
What is the difference between term insurance and other life plans?
Term insurance pays a lump sum to your family if you die during the policy term and has no maturity benefit, so it is usually the cheapest way to get a large cover. Savings or investment-linked plans mix insurance with investment and cost more for the same cover.
What is a super top-up health plan?
A super top-up pays once your claims in a year cross a deductible, such as ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh. Because it only starts after that amount, it costs much less than a regular plan of the same size, which makes it a smart way to add cover.
Does smoking or a pre-existing condition change the premium?
Yes. Tobacco use usually raises term premiums a lot, and pre-existing conditions can raise health premiums, add waiting periods or lead to exclusions. The calculator adjusts its estimate for both.
Are insurance premiums tax deductible?
Under the old tax regime, life insurance premiums may qualify under Section 80C and health insurance premiums under Section 80D, within the limits. The new tax regime generally does not allow these deductions. Rules change, so confirm with a tax professional.
